I've had a lovely time in Chiang Mai and felt a real sense of regret at leaving. The Tropical Inn was lovely and I noticed new elements of the hipster identity everyday. The owner's space is numbered 007!
Anyway, I booked a taxi for 13.30 to get me to the airport in reasonable time for my 15.20 flight to Luang Prabang. I went for a final stroll round the block and settled down for a final coffee before leaving. 13.30 came and went. At 13.40 I suggested we call the taxi. No reply. We booked another taxi; 'should be here in 10 minutes'. Suddenly my London persona kicked back in. The hotel receptionist and I stood outside staring for the non-existent taxi(s). 10 minutes; 12; finally at five to two the taxi pitched up. He was clearly instructed to drivee like hell and we made it to the airport in about 10 minutes. I wasn't too early by any means. For the first time in my life, the plane took off early. And not just early - 20 minutes early.
Anyway it was thankfully an uneventful flight and we got to Luang Prabang and through immigration by 16.30.
First impressions. I'm glad I prised myself out of Chiang Mai because this is much better. It's haard to describe. It has a massively laid back rural feel. The hotel overlooks the Nam Khan river that runs into the Mekong just up the road. The hotel is much simpler than the hipster Inn but with a lovely balcony and everything a simple Londoner could want.
In the evening I visited the main Wat which is lit very strikingly. i also discovered I had a lizard as a room-mate!
