30 November 2014. Excursion to Kuang Si Falls

In the morning a boat of monks made its way up river with a rhythmic calling out. all this observed by the nonchalent captive eagle that seems to belong to one of the hoteliers relatives.

I'd booked a shared minivan to the falls, which are said to be one of the must-sees around Luang Prabang. And so they were! Incredible. I don't thing I've seen falls like them.

The drive takes about 3/4 hour through pleasant countryside close by the Mekong. The entry to the park does not feel like a tourist zoo, although there are quite a lot there. Soon after entering the park, there is a bear sanctuary, created by an Australian lady who took pity on the poor bile bears. Here the rescued bears seem happy, relaxing in their hammocks

 T

hen one comes to the start of the falls. At first the drops are quite low key but the clarity of the water is stunning. Then the sound of the main falls increases and one is eventually upon them. They are certainly quite breathtaking.

Afterwards one can keep climbing to the left or right. I chose the right fairly undeveloped path but didn't quite get to the top. Our van was to leave at 14.30 and I thought if I kept going onwards and upwards I might miss my return. Instead I made my way back down and bought a save the bear T shirt, which saves on laundry too.
